The site chosen for Treaty 7 was originally supposed to be Fort Macleod, but it was later changed to Blackfoot Crossing. On September 19th, 1877, the commissioners and leaders that had arrived at Blackfoot Crossing began discussing terms of the Treaty. The Indigenous population signed away and surrendered their land with this agreement, however, it is argued that they would not have signed Treaty 7 if they understood the consequences as a lot of legal terminology kept them from understanding the severity of the treaty
Each Indigenous group was going to receive almost 6.5 square kilometers per family of five, an immediate payment of $12 was given to every man, woman, and child. They would also receive an annual payment of $25 to every chief, $15 for every minor chief or councillor, and $5 to everyone else. They were also to receive a variety of weapons and clothing, and the Canadian Government also agreed to pay all teachers their owed salary on reserves. Lastly, they also distributed cattle to each family, and chiefs were given one bull and given hunting and trapping privileges on the land that they were to give away.
